SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

2023 - 2024 School year

 

SUMMARY:

To assist the district in carrying out the requirements of the special education program as required by State and Federal law through the identification, assessment, diagnosis and prescription of programs for children who qualify for special education.  To instruct and case manage children who have been identified as having an eligible disability and needing specially designed instruction.  Responsible for planning instruction and/or adaptation of the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:    

Must possess TSPC licensure with Special Education endorsement & Elementary Endorsement or Passing ORELA Test.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. The competent teacher will:
  1. Provide direct instruction to children with learning disabilities and other handicapping conditions when specific methods and materials are required.
  2. Identifies student who has specific learning disabilities and other condition through teacher, principal, and parent referrals.
  3. Assesses the cognitive academic, developmental, behavioral and perceptual skills of the child.
  4. Determines the specific needs of a child and develops an individual educational plan (IEP) to meet the student’s individual needs.
  5. Determines if referred students meet established criteria for the instructional program as approved by state and the district.
  6. Participates in staffing’s with administrators, principals, speech pathologists, reading specialist, and other school personnel to evaluate or develop instructional programs for specific students.
  7. Makes a referral to other agencies when required, to assist in evaluating the specific needs of an individual or to obtain other special services.
  8. Maintains files of all referred students containing: teacher referral forms; parent consent forms for testing and/or special program placement, testing forms, and materials; a summary of test results; and outline of program goals and/or recommendations; progress reports and other pertinent information. Maintains records or student performance and attendance.
  9. Interprets testing results to teachers outlining the teacher in designing and instructional program for the child with specific and measurable goals.
  1. Supplies special instructional materials to the classroom teacher necessary to attain specific goals of the special education child.
  2. Consults with classroom teachers on the progress of special education students and consults with classroom teachers regarding adaptation and modifications to be used.
  3. Works with building principals in scheduling testing and instructional programs or progress of specific individuals.
  1. Obtains consent forms for testing and special program placement from parents when required and is available to explain testing procedures and testing results to parents.
  2. Provides conferences with parents on the progress of the student.
  3. Complies with State and Federal regulations concerning confidentiality of student records and personally identifiable information.
